Heat pumps and energy costs: why the electrification of heating is slowing down
Heat pumps are efficient and sustainable, but energy costs and tariffs are slowing the electrification of heating. Integrated policies and planning are needed.
Heat pumps are now recognized as one of the most effective solutions for reducing emissions in the heating sector.
Efficient, electric and easily integrated with renewables, they represent a pillar of the energy transition .
However, their diffusion is slower than expected. The reason is not technological, but economic: the current energy cost structure makes electrifying heating less cost-effective than it could be.
High efficiency, but energy costs weigh heavily
From a technical point of view, heat pumps offer very high performance, producing more thermal energy than the electricity consumed.
This advantage, however, is often offset by the final price of electricity , which in many contexts remains higher than gas or other fossil fuels.
It is not only production costs that have an impact, but also system charges and tariff components that weigh on electricity more than on other sources.
Added to this is the initial investment, which can be higher than a traditional system, especially in existing buildings or systems not designed for it. The result is a perception of poor short-term economic viability, despite the environmental benefits and potential long-term savings.
Tariffs, incentives, and integrated planning: the levers to activate
To make electric heating truly competitive, a more systemic approach is needed, one that goes beyond individual technologies. Specifically, the following are key:
- a review of electricity tariffs , reducing charges not linked to actual consumption
- stable and targeted incentives , capable of reducing the initial investment gap
- integration with photovoltaic, storage and intelligent load management, to increase self-consumption
- a more advanced system design , which enhances the overall efficiency of the building
For HVAC designers and operators, the challenge is to accompany the electrification of heating with comprehensive solutions capable of making heat pumps not only sustainable but also truly economically competitive.
