BRUGG Pipes manufactures cryogenic pipes for the European aerospace industry
BRUGG Pipes recently developed and installed flexible, insulated cryogenic piping for a European aerospace industry project, expanding the testing infrastructure for innovative propulsion systems. This initiative represents a concrete example of how highly engineered solutions can meet extremely specialized and high-precision requirements.
The pipes , with external diameters of 98 mm and 174 mm and a total length of 185 meters each , connect an elevated cryogenic fluid tank to a lower-level facility. These systems are designed to transport cryogenic fluids safely, with minimal leakage even under severe thermal stresses, and include a redundant leak monitoring system , ensuring safe operation down to -200°C.
Material characteristics and production
The pipes are made of 316L stainless steel , with coils compliant with EN 10028 and a maximum wall thickness of 1 mm. The pipes are TIG or laser welded without filler material, allowing for the production of hundreds of meters of pipe in a single cycle. All weld seams are subjected to radiographic inspections both at the Wunstorf, Germany, plant and on site, ensuring compliance with leakproofing and safety requirements.
Installation and flexibility
BRUGG Pipes also handled the technical planning, assembly, and installation of the pipes. Thanks to the system's flexibility and limited number of connection points, installation was quick and easy compared to traditional rigid pipes.
