PV Project Implementation Conference – China 2012

The potential for photovoltaic projects in China is enormous, particularly in light of falling system costs, this was the consensus among the 230 participants at the PV Project Implementation Conference – China 2012.

During the conference different national and international people went on to speak about the power of this country for PV installations. The potential of photovoltaic project development in China is huge, particularly in light of falling system costs. However, overcoming policy and grid connection issues is key.

Sebastian Trimpl from IBC solar believes that China’s solar industry has more potential than any other country due to its focus on large-scale projects, in fact it has several plants with a 10 MW capacity power, while small projects and roof applications remain a niche market. Timpl also said that attention must be given to quality standards that aren’t always on par with international standards.

Peter Xie from GCL Energy discussed China’s solar irradiation. He believes that Tibet and Western China are the best places to develop solar installations. Another advantage are the low costs of the installations. The costs falling from 2,37 USD per Watt in the third quarter of 2011 to between 1,74 and 1,90 USD per Watt in the first quarter of 2012.

Finally, Sebastian Meyer from Azure International compared the development of China’s solar industry with that of the wind industry because until now the second one was at the first place in the field of the renewable energies. He thinks that the solar ones will become as important as the wind industry.
Compared to wind, solar is faster to implement and requires less heavy equipment.
