Arcobaleno Farm Improves Cattle Welfare and Milk Production with Breezair Cooling Solution

Modena, Italy – Arcobaleno Farm, a large dairy farm in the Modena area covering 2,000 square metres of stables, has successfully tackled critical heat stress issues affecting its cattle by installing Breezair evaporative cooling systems.

During the summer of 2015, with temperatures soaring between 34°C and 36°C, the farm experienced a troubling rise in cattle mortality and a significant drop in appetite, which directly impacted milk production. Veterinary experts confirmed the link between high temperatures and increased mortality rates.

In early 2016, seeking an effective and sustainable cooling solution, Arcobaleno Farm engaged Italkero, the official supplier of Breezair evaporative coolers in Italy. Traditional air conditioning was deemed unsuitable due to the farm’s open stable structures and the prohibitive installation and running costs involved.

Breezair evaporative coolers offered the perfect alternative: an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient solution using only water and electricity to cool large semi-open spaces. The system also avoids synthetic refrigerants, aligning with the farm’s sustainability goals.

After assessing the stable’s conditions and ventilation needs, Italkero initially installed three Breezair units with axial fans in the main stable as a trial. Encouraged by the results, Arcobaleno added two more units. The upgraded cooling system effectively lowered temperatures to replicate spring-like comfort even during peak summer heat.

Between 2016 and 2018, the farm recorded a marked increase in cattle feed intake and milk production. The cooler temperatures also improved the cattle’s distribution within the stables, promoting proper use of feeding bunks and preventing overcrowding at drinking points.

How Breezair Works:

  1. Hot outside air passes through water-soaked cooling pads.

  2. As the air moves through, water evaporates, absorbing heat from the air.

  3. A fan pushes the cooled air through ducts, delivering fresh, cool air inside the stables.

Breezair units feature a patented fan design that can operate in “fan only” mode (without water), continuously circulating fresh air to maintain a healthy environment.

Benefits:

  • Significant energy savings—up to 87% less energy consumption compared to conventional air conditioning.

  • Easy installation and low maintenance.

  • Continuous supply of 100% fresh, filtered air, improving animal health and welfare.

  • Cost-effective and environmentally sustainable cooling for large, semi-open agricultural buildings.

Arcobaleno Farm’s experience demonstrates the importance of innovative climate control solutions in agriculture to improve animal wellbeing, boost productivity, and promote sustainability.
