Clean Energy: Europe needs further investment in research and innovation

The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) of the European Parliament, yesterday approved the proposed allocation to 6 billion Euros for research and development of clean energy (within the resources allocated to the program Horizon 2020).

In particular, the funding will be for renewable energies, energy efficiency, networking and intelligent storage systems. "This programme is an opportunity for Europe to invest in its future and to help us get out of the crisis ", said the industry committee chair, Amalia Sartori (EPP, IT).

75% of the budjet is for research and development in the energy sector, needed to help the EU to achieve the goal of increasing up to 3% of GDP in research and innovation by 2020.
15% of funds are allocated to the program Intelligent Energy Europe, the Commission ITRE plans to allocate funding for research into solar, wind, bioenergy, fuel cells, hydrogen, CCS and smart grid.
