An English plumber was sentenced for installing a boiler without being Gas Safe registered
Installing a boiler without the required authorization could prove costly: in England, a plumber has been sentenced to community service and to the payment of a fine.
Installing a boiler without being authorized to do so is known to be illegal, and subject to serious risks, both from a legal and a safety point of view.
Mr. John Ranfield, a 63-year-old man from the English parish of Tiptree, in the county of Essex, eighty kilometers far from the capital, London, seems to know something about that.
The plumber of one of the most densely populated villages in England, recently agreed to install a boiler for domestic use, without being enrolled on the Gas Safe Register, a kind of national register delivering certificates to gas installers.
The imprudence of the Englishman could prove very costly to the masters of the house, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Inspector, Kim Tichias, announced: an improper boiler installation, in fact, performed by unqualified or unauthorized staff, put people’s lives at risk of “carbon monoxide poisoning and gas explosions," that is, of potential death.
Fortunately, the carelessness of Mr. Ranfield proved costly to the imprudent technician alone: found guilty of violating three different gas safety norms, the plumber has been sentenced to 150 hours of community service, to be performed within a year , and to pay a fine of 500 pounds, that is, about 600 euros.
This story, as recalled by the HSE Inspector, should serve as a warning to those who turn themselves into boiler installers, without being approved to do so: "Only registered gas engineers, who are trained and competent, work on gas appliances and fittings".
