Photovoltaics, green envy growing: neighbors are decisive in the choice of installing a PV plant

According to a US study, green envy is growing: neighbours would be decisive in the choice of installling a PV plant on your roof.
From the well-known traditional proverb "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" to the third millennium motto "The roof on the other side of the fence is getting more and more…photovoltaic”.

If solar panels continue to be one of the most widely used systems in residential buildings for the production of electricity and heat, it seems to be due to neighbors stimulating their adoption, as a recent US study evidenced: if one has installed a photovoltaic system on his or her roof, in all probability also the neighbour will want one.

Marcello Graziano and Kenneth Gillingham from Connectitut and Yale universities, who are the authors of the study published in the Journal of Economic Geography, analyzed new solar installation maps in the state of Connecticut, thats is, in the northeast of the United States: the mapping reveals that solar panels installed on the roof of American houses would be concentrated in areas close to each other. Not only that, over a six-month period, residential installations would be increased by 44% in a range of about 300m, and 39% in houses further away, in any case within 600m.

In conclusion, if one’s neighbor installs a photovoltaic system on his or her roof, probably his or her neighbours will adopt the same choice, in turn installing solar panels on the roof of their own houses. Government incentives or green sensitivity would slightly deal with the choice of a photovoltaic system. Similarly, not only wealthy classes would want to buy this technology, but mostly the vast majority of middle-class American people who undergo this kind of green envy.

K. Gillingham actually uses the term "Green Envy", indicating a kind of psychology of the envious, contextualized, however, in the era of green economy. A "disorder" destined to spread, to the delight of the green industry and the environment, since green awareness is the future of the planet and of the world economy.
