New EU energy label for all hydronic systems and Ecodesign
New EU regulation supplementing Directive 2010/30/EU with regard to the energy labelling of space heaters, combination heaters, packages of space heater, temperature control and solar device and packages of combination heater, temperature control and solar device.

The European Commission, in the broader context of Directive 2010/30/EU, better known as Ecodesign, has developed a new legislation which, once approved, will introduce a new energy label for all hydronic systems under 12 kW. The label will identify the energy consumption of boilers, water heaters, heat pumps (high and low temperature) and small systems for cogeneration, with energy efficiency classes from A to G + + +.
With this new classification which, although using different criteria, uniquely identifies the consumption of technologically very different products, users will be able to get a clear idea of the consumption of each product.
Starting from 2015, the date on which the regulation will become mandatory in all Member States (at least according to the current draft), consumers will be able to choose the most efficient heating system for their homes, on the basis of a single labeling. The EU goal is obviously to promote less energy consuming products, incentiving the use of renewable energy sources and reducing the energy consumption of housing, which still produce a large share of emissions into the atmosphere.

Together with the energy label for heaters (ENER Lot 1) and water heaters (ENER Lot 2), the ecodesign rules for both product groups are expected to trigger substantial energy and CO2 savings.
“Following the adoption of the energy label, ecodesign rules for heaters mark a second major step towards the achievement of EU’s 2020 targets, in particular improving energy efficiency and the use of renewables in Europe.” comments Andrea Voigt, EPEE Director General.

But, as the porpose of energy labeling is to classify each product class, there are still some issues reguarding sorveliance on the market. Once introduced the label, controlling procedures should be decided by member states: "there is the risk that there will be not planned adequate controls - says Elena Proietti, technical officer of CO.AER - we are waiting to see how the member states will do, if tey will not introduce an appropriate and effective system of monitoring and sanctions, especially for products made outside the EU, there is a risk that the system won’t be working as it should, and the risk of a big damage to companies wich are investing heavily in research and innovation. "
In the meantime, however, a first step has been done and all the major European associations applaud the new law, which is definitely a first important signal given by the Commission to citizens and European industries.
