Italy Cuts CO2 emissions and Increases energy savings in 2022 thanks to incentives and energy efficiency

Savings of 2.5 Million tons of oil equivalent and reduction of 6.5 Million tons of CO2 emissions thanks to ecobonus, home bonus, superbonus, and sustainable mobility initiatives

Italy achieved significant energy savings in 2022, reducing its reliance on oil and gas and consequently lowering CO2 emissions.

As highlighted by ENEA, these results amount to a reduction of approximately 6.5 million tons of CO2 and energy savings of over 2.5 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe).

Tax deductions generated savings of 1.363 mtoe

This progress brings Italy significantly closer to the goals of the new Energy Efficiency Directive.

ENEA particularly emphasized the contribution of tax deductions (Ecobonus, Home Bonus, and Superbonus) to achieving these objectives. These measures generated savings of 1.363 Mtoe, accounting for 54.3% of the total new energy savings in 2022.

Additionally, incentives for sustainable mobility and White Certificates significantly contributed to the total energy savings.

In terms of the Ecobonus, introduced in 2007, ENEA reported a reduction in interventions in 2022, but with a value double that of the 2017-2019 period.

Most interventions focus on more efficient climate control systems and window replacements. Since 2007, the Ecobonus has stimulated approximately 6.4 million interventions, with total energy savings of nearly 25,000 GWh/year.

Over 325,000 projects registered by December 2022

The Home Bonus showed a decrease in the number of interventions in 2022 compared to 2021, but with a smaller decline in energy savings, suggesting an improvement in the quality of interventions.

Regarding the Superbonus, by December 2022, over 325,000 projects were registered, with significant investments and notable energy savings.

Ilaria Bertini, Director of the ENEA Department of Energy Efficiency, highlighted the importance of energy efficiency in the context of the current energy crisis and in achieving the objectives of the European Directive.

She also emphasized ENEA's role in training and information, promoting green jobs as key elements in the energy transition.
