European market trends towards nearly zero-energy buildings

An international study reveals that in Europe the emissions from heating and powering buildings will be virtually zero by next decade. Also the European citizens support the transition to nearly-zero energy buildings.
According to Navigant Research report, an international research institute on global clean technology markets, by 2019 in Europe there will be a huge increase in the number of nearly zero-energy buildings, thanks to the combined action of European regulations and energy-efficient technologies.

The study, released in 2014, puts the European market for residential and commercial building energy efficient products and services under the magnifying glass, assessing the market drivers and barriers impeding its development throughout the European Union, for then finally highlighting how the mandatory changes imposed to country-level building regulations are actually improving the performance requirements applied to new construction and major renovations of existing buildings.

In fact, as results from innovative technological systems, supported by stringent continental legislation, the building sector in Europe has achieved major progress so far, with regards to energy, lighting, insulation and automation performances and services. According to the report, by 2021 the emissions from heating and powering buildings will be virtually zero, both in private and public properties.

The Navigant Research's analysis also suggests that such major changes and progress in the technology and service-level innovation would not be possible without a change in European citizens’ lifestyle and mind-set: it is not just the companies, but also the customers, who are now demanding for effective energy efficiency, performance improvements, automation systems and low costs. Therefore, the adaptation of the HVAC&R industry to the new challenges posed by world consumers should not be surprising, since they encourage energy service companies to expand their offerings, with particular attention to the environment.

According to Navigant Research’s forecasts, by 2023 the European market for building energy efficient products and services will almost double its revenue, from today’s 41.4 billion to €80.8 billion.
