To meet the requirements of a customer operating in the oil & gas sector, Light Progress developed a custom UV-C solution for air treatment inside Air Handling Units installed in offshore environments: a system designed to integrate disinfection, reliability and maintenance safety in a critical application context.

Air disinfection in offshore AHUs: the role of UV-C technology

In AHUs designed for offshore applications, air treatment plays a central role in supporting the quality of the air supplied to served spaces and protecting the internal components of the system.

AHU in an offshore environment

The challenge

The customer, operating in the oil & gas sector, needed to improve air disinfection inside AHUs installed on an offshore platform. The main critical issues concerned:

  • difficult environmental conditions and a corrosive marine atmosphere;
  • continuous exposure to airborne contaminants;
  • limited access to equipment for maintenance activities;
  • the need to manually switch off the system during interventions inside the ducts;
  • the request for a solution adaptable to the specific characteristics of the existing AHUs.

Light Progress’ response

Light Progress developed UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16, a custom UV-C air treatment system derived from the UV-RACK series and designed to meet the specific requirements of offshore systems.

  • 316L stainless steel construction for greater corrosion resistance;
  • stainless steel product labels to ensure readability and identification over time;
  • higher protection level on the control boards;
  • external handle for manual control of UV treatment;
  • possibility to customize materials, configuration and additional features.

A disinfection barrier integrated into AHUs

UV-C technology is used to help reduce the microbial load in treated air. Integrated inside air handling units, it acts directly on the airflow and on critical areas of the system, providing continuous support for indoor air quality.

UV-C treatment helps neutralize airborne microorganisms and pathogens, improving the conditions of the air supplied to occupied spaces.

Integrated operation

The solution is designed to be installed inside air treatment systems, without altering the overall logic of the HVAC system.

UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16: a tailor-made UV-C solution

The UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16 system was developed from the need to adapt UV-C treatment to a particularly demanding application context. The design basis derives from the UV-RACK series, but the configuration was developed to meet the specific requirements of offshore platforms.

The value of the solution lies not only in air disinfection, but in the ability to integrate UV-C technology, mechanical resistance, component protection and maintenance safety into a single system.
