AHU AIR TREATMENT IN CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTS
On offshore vessels and platforms, the quality of the air treated by HVAC systems is not only a matter of comfort: it affects personnel safety, operational reliability and equipment lifespan.
To meet the requirements of a customer operating in the oil & gas sector, Light Progress developed a custom UV-C solution for air treatment inside Air Handling Units installed in offshore environments: a system designed to integrate disinfection, reliability and maintenance safety in a critical application context.

Air in confined environments
In offshore technical and operational areas, air quality directly affects personnel wellbeing and the continuity of operations.
Aggressive marine conditions
Humidity, salt and airborne contaminants can place components, materials and systems installed on board or on platforms under severe stress.
Complex maintenance
Access to systems is not always straightforward: every intervention must be planned to reduce downtime, risks and operating times.
Operational continuity
In offshore contexts, air treatment must be integrated with safety requirements and the need to keep systems operational.
Air disinfection in offshore AHUs: the role of UV-C technology
In AHUs designed for offshore applications, air treatment plays a central role in supporting the quality of the air supplied to served spaces and protecting the internal components of the system.
The integration of UV-C systems inside the units makes it possible to act directly on the airflow and on the surfaces it passes through, helping reduce the microbiological load and maintain more controlled hygienic conditions over time.
For installations subject to continuous operation, this solution adds a constant disinfection action to filtration systems, without requiring complex operating procedures.

The challenge
The customer, operating in the oil & gas sector, needed to improve air disinfection inside AHUs installed on an offshore platform. The main critical issues concerned:
- difficult environmental conditions and a corrosive marine atmosphere;
- continuous exposure to airborne contaminants;
- limited access to equipment for maintenance activities;
- the need to manually switch off the system during interventions inside the ducts;
- the request for a solution adaptable to the specific characteristics of the existing AHUs.
Light Progress’ response
Light Progress developed UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16, a custom UV-C air treatment system derived from the UV-RACK series and designed to meet the specific requirements of offshore systems.
- 316L stainless steel construction for greater corrosion resistance;
- stainless steel product labels to ensure readability and identification over time;
- higher protection level on the control boards;
- external handle for manual control of UV treatment;
- possibility to customize materials, configuration and additional features.
UV-C TECHNOLOGY FOR AIR TREATMENT
A disinfection barrier integrated into AHUs
UV-C technology is used to help reduce the microbial load in treated air. Integrated inside air handling units, it acts directly on the airflow and on critical areas of the system, providing continuous support for indoor air quality.
Air disinfection
UV-C treatment helps neutralize airborne microorganisms and pathogens, improving the conditions of the air supplied to occupied spaces.
Integrated operation
The solution is designed to be installed inside air treatment systems, without altering the overall logic of the HVAC system.
Operational control
External manual management allows technical personnel to operate safely during maintenance activities inside the ducts.

UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16: a tailor-made UV-C solution
The UV-RACK-CS-IMT-16 system was developed from the need to adapt UV-C treatment to a particularly demanding application context. The design basis derives from the UV-RACK series, but the configuration was developed to meet the specific requirements of offshore platforms.
The value of the solution lies not only in air disinfection, but in the ability to integrate UV-C technology, mechanical resistance, component protection and maintenance safety into a single system. Every element was designed to ensure operational continuity in an environment where corrosion, limited accessibility and technical reliability are decisive factors.
This approach makes the project a concrete example of how UV-C technology can be customized for complex HVAC applications, where a standard solution would not be sufficient.
DESIGN FEATURES
Materials, protection and safety for offshore environments
In an offshore system, every component must be assessed not only for its function, but also for its ability to withstand environmental conditions over time and simplify technical operations.
316L stainless steel
316L stainless steel construction increases corrosion resistance and contributes to the durability of the system in marine environments.
Stainless steel labels
Stainless steel labels maintain product readability and identification even under severe environmental conditions.
Protected boards
The higher protection level on the control boards protects internal components from humidity, dust and other environmental factors.
External handle
External manual control makes it possible to manage UV treatment during maintenance, improving safety and operational flexibility.
Maintenance and safety: two key aspects in the design
In offshore applications, system maintenance must be planned with particular care, because every intervention may involve downtime, complex access procedures and higher operational risks.
For this reason, the use of solutions designed to reduce manual activities and simplify system status control represents a tangible advantage.
The possibility to monitor operation, limit direct interventions on equipment and reduce the frequency of cleaning or replacement activities helps improve operator safety and service continuity.

Benefits for the system, personnel and operational management
The integration of UV-C technology into offshore AHUs makes it possible to act on multiple levels: air quality, safety, maintenance and equipment lifespan.
Improved air quality
The UV-C system contributes to the neutralization of airborne pathogens, supporting healthier indoor conditions for personnel working in confined spaces.
Reduced downtime
Manual control through the external handle facilitates maintenance activities and reduces the risk of prolonged interruptions in overall operations.
Longer equipment lifespan
The stainless steel structure and corrosion-resistant features contribute to system longevity, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Greater personnel safety
The custom solution allows technical personnel to carry out activities inside the ducts with greater operational control, without compromising air treatment.
Not just a product: a design approach for critical HVAC
The offshore case demonstrates how UV-C technology can be applied effectively even in contexts where operating conditions require specific design choices. In these scenarios, installing a device is not enough: it is necessary to develop a solution consistent with the system, the environment, the maintenance procedures and the safety objectives.
Light Progress works precisely at this level: designing customized UV-C systems for air, water and surface treatment, adapting materials, configurations and technical features to real application needs.
