BUILD UP: MAKE YOUR BUILDING GREENER

The BUILD UP interactive web portal tells you all about energy-saving measures in buildings. It provides free access to a wide range of information on best working practices, technologies and legislation for energy reduction.
Take the case of a 40 year old nursing home in Stuttgart-Sonnenberg – a good example of what can be achieved when a major renovation is combined with an energy-efficient, retrofitting concept developed by a design team who look at the bigger picture. Modernising such a building offers an opportunity to rethink the overall structure and bring building service systems up to date.
Coupling these modernisation measures with energy-efficient, retrofit renovations can combine an increase in occupants´ comfort while dramatically reducing the energy costs. Those savings offset part of the cost of the renovations. In the nursing home’s case, the use of high-performance insulation together with the installation of a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit with a gas condensing boiler for peak load have reduced the building´s energy consumption by two thirds.
Find out more details about this case on BUILD UP as well as many other stories about concrete good practices in Europe.
BUILD UP is a European Commission initiative launched in June 2009 to increase the awareness of all parties in the building chain of the savings potential which remains untapped. Following political agreement reached between the European Council and Parliament on the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive on 17 November 2009, the www.buildup.eu portal will be of even more interest to public authorities, building professionals and building occupants alike.
